Memorial Flag for Victims of Terrorism
Acorn Capital Management (Acorn) Oklahoma City World Headquarters is located in the Heritage Building downtown (formerly the Oklahoma City Journal Record Building). This office space is significant to both the company as well as Oklahoma City and the nation as it is also the home of the Terrorism Memorial Flag, a 63-foot long flag that contains the names of nearly 4,000 U.S. citizens who were victims of terrorism since 1970.
Originally housed in the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT), Acorn is now the steward of this important American artifact. The flag is made up of small needlepoint squares. Each one holds the name of a victim from the Oklahoma City Murrah bombing, the 9/11 attacks, and other acts of terrorism.
“My purpose for creating this flag was so that those who were killed in acts of terrorism would not be forgotten,” Elizabeth Barnes, Founder of the Memorial Flag Project.
An army of 1,300 volunteers helped by working together and stitching individual squares that were then arranged into 65 different sections. The flag was eventually donated and mounted to the ceiling in the library of the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism.
